Defunding Planned Parenthood Fails Again In The Senate

Senator Rand Paul had introduced the amendment to H.R. 6157 for Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services package, that would take away taxpayer funds from abortion providers.

  • This amendment would make sure that federal tax dollars are not going to organizations that perform abortions, like Planned Parenthood.
  • Funds for these services would continue to be provided to entities that are eligible and not performing abortions, such as community health centers.

At first Senate Republican leadership blocked his amendment, calling it a “poison pill”

Rand Paul gave a speech on the Senate floor,

“Planned Parenthood ends the lives of 320,000 babies each year, that’s about 900 babies every day, Planned Parenthood received over 400 million dollars of taxpayer money, the government with a wink and a nod tells us that Planned Parenthood doesn’t spend the money on abortions but everybody knows that the taxpayers are really cross-subsidizing Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills.”

The Senate did allow a vote on the amendment following Sen. Paul’s speech. However, his amendment failed in a 45-48 vote with a 60-vote threshold. Where two of the so-called Republican Senators, Collins and Murkowski, joined Democrats to vote against it as they do with every pro-life bill.

Paul’s reaction,

“While I am disappointed in the outcome of this vote, I will never apologize for standing up for life. If it took exposing the preference of so many in my own party to continue reckless spending over protecting the innocent, it was a fight worth having,”

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, said that the senate vote would have consequences in the mid-term election in November. Conservatives need to get out and vote for people who want to defend the constitution and defend human life.
